Belated Happy National Pi[e] Day

Pi = 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716 – and it keeps going (if you really want to see, check this out!)

Lots of people do different things to honour yesterday/America’s Pi Day. Let us take for instance, my friends’ maths teachers. Mr S, well to put it nicely, is highly enamoured with Pi. As in, yesterday, he spent the entire period showing his class (and this is the smartest class in the school mind you) ‘Pi’ music videos and mercilessly singing along. *shudder* – but also kinda funny ;)

Being a food obsessed, maths hater that I am, it was only natural for me to think of pie. The real type of pie. Not some imaginary number that really does not make any sense :P

Anyway, I was totally going to celebrate with an uber delicious, super gorgeous, terrific pie. And I would have if I could have. But a little thing in my life, called Yr 11, of course stopped me from sharing an aromatic homemade pie with the world/my area. So I had to make do with what little I could do. Me :)… I mean :(… ;)

A nice big bite…

I decided on these things when looking for a one person pie celebration recipe

  • Had to have chocolate – My birthday baking of the past two weeks while yummy, has been absolutely torturous to my chocolate levels!

Well yes, really this was my only requirement :)

Easy to please no?

Anyway, I was fruitlessly (pun intended of course ;)) searching all over the web and in my cookbooks, when suddenly I found it. A one person cobbler recipe. And I don’t care if you don’t call it a pie but it is close enough for me – a shortcrust pastry with filling? A pie :D

Love the drippy side – leave the tiniest gap of strawberry filling showing and you will get it :D

So, if the pictures have not told you already, I made one of the most indulgent cobblers imaginable. In a cute lil ramekin. Just for lil ol’ me ;)

Wishing you my loves a happy belated pi day (and if you are going to celebrate please do it right ;))

Enjoy!

One Person Strawberry Hot Fudge Chocolate Cobbler Pie
Loosely Based From: The Kitchn

Ingredients

  • 3 tbs plain flour
  • 1 tbs cocoa powder
  • 2 tbs brown sugar
  • 2 tbs caster sugar
  • 3-4 tbs (42-56g) butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 3 large strawberries, washed, cubed
  • Homemade hot fudge sauce (I got you covered ;))

If you look deep enough you will see the molten chocolate-y goodness :D

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees
  2. Grease and sugar a ramekin
  3. Line a baking sheet with baking paper
  4. Mix together as much hot fudge as you want with strawberries and pat into ramekin – should come to 1/2 way up but no more otherwise will completely burst out of pastry
  5. Mix together first 6 ingredients till doughy consistency
  6. Pat onto fruit filling, covering completely
  7. Place on baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the crust is a little dry and has a couple of cracks
  8. Cool for 2 minutes before dousing in ice cream, more hot fudge and strawberries
  9. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can change this recipe in infinite ways – to make a normal crust, add in 1/4 cup plain flour and remove cocoa powder, or add coconut instead – wait for crust to be golden before removing from oven
  • If want only a fruity filling, macerate your fruit with sugar and lemon juice, stirring occasionally for 30 minutes or until juices released – use berries, peaches any fruit really
  • Ditch the chocolate (if you are a little off…) – mix bananas/mangoes and caramel and dump it in with a golden crust (topped with crunchy biscuit pieces to make it Gaytime-esque :D

I will say it before and I will say it again – Happy Belated Pi[e] Day :D
There is no better way to spend the day than by celebrating food holidays ;)

Quick Note (words of wisdom from my chocolate calendar): “One third of the fat in chocolate comes from oleic acid, a healthy type of fat” :D
See? The only reason I tell you to celebrate in each chocolate is because I love you and want you to be healthy ;)

congrats on all your awards as well! :)

  5. You know I never heard of Pi day until well, Pi day. I’ve only been baking since Dec 2011 so I didn’t know about these foodie days. I feel kinda cheated out of Pi due to my lack of knowledge. I’ll go cry myself to sleep tonight, lol.

Chocolate and strawberries AND Ice cream? Death by dessert… oh yes. Everything looks so damn delicious, I want to lick my iPad screen!

Thanks for joining in on my blog too. Nice to meet you and add a new baker buddy!

    • Aww do not do that to yourself – I started blogging properly in October and missed out Choc Chip week and with my name, it was sacriligeous :(
But we learn from our experiences/bake regardless of holidays :D

I am so glad you enjoyed this dessert so much – it is a trifle over the top ;)
But that’s how we bakers do things :D
It was my pleasure to visit your blog my friend – it is awesome!

      Cheers

  6. Lisa says:

Every time I come here, I just smile at the title of your blog – LOVE IT! I also LOVE this your strawberry chocolate cobbler. If those photos aren’t food porn, I don’t know what is!

    • Thank you so much :D
I am thrilled at how much you enjoyed this post – and I know what you are talking about when you say food porn because I have been on your blog ;)

      Cheers
      Choc Chip Uru

  7. No matter how much we hate Maths but it is one subject that comes handy in cooking and especially baking. By converting this recipe into one portion you did math.
i don’t care whether it is a pie or cobbler or cake. I just want it to the dessert to tingle my taste buds. And you have done a good job.

  8. Elaine says:

I love cobblers and make them often during the summer, but I have never made a chocolate one nor have I have tasted one. Your one portion cobbler looks wonderful!

Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving such a nice comment.

    • Thank you very much :D – honestly I did not know if a Choc cobbler would work but I am glad it did!
And it was my pleasure – you have an awesome blog :)

      Cheers
      Choc Chip Uru

  9. At this rate, CCU, you’re not going to have time for schoolwork.

I’m surprised you don’t prefer a chocolate flower. Oh, wait, are there any chocolate flowers? Well, I think the frangipani, which I’d never heard of but quickly researched, is an absolutely lovely flower.

    • Trust me my friend, it is sweet of you to worry but I am happily more than on top – and when my exams roll around cooking will be minimal :)

And if there were chocolate flowers growing I definitely would have made that species extinct by now ;)
      But yes frangipanis are gorgeous!

      Cheers

  10. Louise says:

If this is what you rustle up for Pi(e) day, I can just imagine what goodies you will be whipping up for National Pie Day:)

I’m terrible at Math but I sure do enjoy “oners” like this. Knowing me I’d be tempted to make just two; one for dessert you know:)

Thank you so much for sharing and congrats on the awards. It was nice visiting for the first time and learning a bit about you. (can’t stand spiders either:)

P.S. I must add, I shied away from twitter for quite a while but now, I love it. Just think of all the people who missed out on your deliciousness:)

    • I never even realised there was a National Pie DAy – I thought both days were one and the same – oh my gosh :P – Another excuse to pie myself up :D
And I love it dessert for dinner and for dessert ;)
And thank you for the congratulations – I am glad am not the only one with spider issues :D
And you are right – I will get facebook after graduating from high school to keep in touch – maybe I will twitter myself then too? Who knows :D

      Cheers
      Choc Chip Uru

  11. What were you, a fly on the wall in Mr S’ class?! We love Pi Day in this family! First reason, it’s my birthday! Then of course, we’ve got a couple of Maths geniuses aged 6 and 8 who insist on reciting by heart, the value of Pi to 50 digits after the decimal point, throughout the day!
I love this recipe, it looks so inviting!

    • Haha, no I got my info from my mates ;)
And wow that is so cool! Happy Birthday for 14th March :D
And I cannot believe it – your children are like Einstein – definitely need to feed them lots of pie to keep their brains so sharp :P
      And thank you :D

      Cheers
      Choc Chip Uru

  14. Liz says:

My son reminded me it was Pi day…but not with enough advance notice to make a real pie! I should have done like you and made a delicious cobbler! And chocolate and strawberry looks like an amazing combo!!!

    • Aww that is ok – whip up anything anytime, the day is just to remind us of how special that food is ;)
I am really happy you enjoyed this post my friend – trust me, nothing beats chocolate and strawberries :D

      Cheers

  15. Let’s say I’m not very good at baking, but my math is WORSE than my baking… now you start thinking how bad my math would be! lol. I rather want to try making this than doing math homework. =) Looks very delicious!!!!!!

    • I doubt someone as talented as you in the kitchen can be not good at baking! But yes I agree, my maths is much worse than my baking too ;)
And thank you my friend – it is the ultimate form of procrastination ;)

      Cheers
      Choc Chip Uru

    • Haha, I should definitely go see that post ;)
Thank you so much! I am glad you enjoyed this pie so much :D – pi may be a little interesting at times but pie beats all!

  18. Congrats on more awards. You deserve them and it’s nice getting to know you better through your fun facts. I don’t know if this dessert is technically a pie but I’ll be happy to call it that if you’re serving it to me :)

    • Thank you my friend :D
I love the culture of giving blogging awards – it certainly brings the blogging community together!
And I know cobbler isn’t technically a pie but I am glad you see it in the same light as me ;)

      Cheers

  20. Congrats on all the awards you’ve been getting! I’m totally digging the individual pie!! This sounds amazing with the chocolatey fudgey filling over fresh strawberries! Wish someone would make me one of these ;) it would be gone in seconds! Super yum!!

    • Thank you do much on both counts my friend! If we didn’t have an ocean separating us, I would be at your door at dawn with this to serve as breakfast :D

You are far, far too kind!! Thank you so much for the shout out and award. I want to devour everything you post as well! This dessert looks spectacular. 23. I hated maths too :) it was horrible! I failed more than I passed and it was always my worse unit! Really hope I never have to do maths EVER AGAIN hehe :P I love how you found a one person dessert recipe! I swear there’s market for a one person dessert book ~ Thanks for sharing! Can’t wait to try!!!

    • Good to know Maths didn’t only focus on me ;)
And thank you by friend, so glad you enjoyed! I bet if someone came up with a single pie, single muffin, single everything he/she would be famous :D

      Cheers
      Choc Chip Uru

  24. This is about the best way to get a bite of rich chocolate and sweet strawberries as far as I am concerned. At face value it looks like a gooey chocolate lava cake, but the surprise is inside with the strawberries.
Truly a decandant way to celebrate PI day. Well done-yum!

  25. Happy belated national pi(e) day! what a great way to celebrate
Thank you so much for the awards..I am truly honored
It was a pleasure to get to know a little more about you. I am terrified of spiders too! and I had a good laugh thinking of the singing math teacher

Youf chocolate goodness looks awesome too (as always!). Have a wonderful day!!

  28. My sister just came home; she lived in France for four months & loved it. But I missed her– thank goodness she got homesick! I am terrified of spiders. And I can’t kill anything. Well, except mosquitoes and houseflies. I got no problem killing those. But the spiders paralyze me with fear and I scream for Chad to come and take them outside.

Love the individual pi(e)! I can always count on you to satisfy my chocolate needs.

    • I am so happy you and your sister are reunited once more (but only if she brought home swiss chocolates ;))
And it is so good to know someone else shares my phobia :D
Thank you so much my friend – I am glad you enjoyed these definite choc-a-holic pies :)

      Cheers

  29. Hello!

Happy belated Pi day. There were some talks worldwide about Pi that it was too old and by now wrong and that they had a better mathematical solutions in mind.
    anyway…

I could need one of your awesome looking choco pies! YUMM! =P

    • Thank you my friend – and wow, I think for some mathematicians, the world would actually crumble without pi ;) (personally it would make my tests a lot easier)
And I am so glad you enjoyed these cobbler pies :D

      Cheers
      Choc Chip Uru
