Burning And Berries

Today, the weather is scorching. I am talking hitting up in the 30s, flies galore and my feet unable to touch the pavement.

Pool, fans, ice cold water – it is all useless today and though I was planning on pulling down my Christmas tree today, it just didn’t happen. These hot days make me want to sit around with the AC on full blast while I eat thick juicy grapes and ice cream with no limit.

I am feeling so lazy today that I am not even posting this blog post till now, when I actually should have done it at least 4 hours ago. I had the pictures (which were taken quite quickly due to the unbearable heat) ready to go and when I sat down on my laptop, BAM – I fell asleep *smiles sheepishly*

15Anyway, this very UV morning, I was lounging around, enjoying a bowl of ripe, sweet strawberries when it hit me. It hit me with fever so hot it was if I had swallowed the sun which is currently outside my window. I wanted perfectly creamy strawberry ice cream.

The chocolate ice cream sitting in my freezer would not do – too dense, too rich – I wanted refreshing, dreamy strawberry ice cream which would make my toes curl up and make me finally enjoy the… well, the joys of summer.

44My problem – I have yet to eat a delicious strawberry ice cream – my list

  • Baskin Robbins – too icy and granita-like, very little strawberry chunks and tastes a little bland
  • New Zealand Natural – very artificial and reminds me of cherry (not even strawberry!) cough medicine
  • Wendy’s – Best of the three for sure but doesn’t refresh me and leaves me feel like I have a heavy pot of cream in my belly… maybe I do

34Now strawberries are one of my staple foods. We all have them, do not even try to deny it. A food you eat every single day that without, you just feel wretched and want to cry. For me, that food is strawberries. As much of a chocolate fiend as I am, I eat a whole punnet of strawberries (250g) in my breakfast – and I am proud to scream that out in this internet world. They are small and cute and juicy or big and fat and flavoursome.

They are red (helloo, my blog has strawberries on it!) and pretty to look at and are just a beautiful fruit. And of course I had a strawberry ice cream recipe tucked under my arm, though I was quite unsure of whether it would result. It was from Annie Eats and has been on so many blogs before, so I was a little more confident, though by now you know my standards are obviously a little too high in this ice cream!

And boy did this ice cream result – it was fresh, no hint of watery fruit, chunky, smooth and delicious – exactly what my burning passion for strawberries needs as well as what my body in general needs to cool down.

This recipe, here, is genius. But I think my little addition made it just a little extra tasty (I tasted the before and after). A splash of strawberry essence. Before adding the macerated strawberries, just a little splash.

Trust me on this. Just what you think is appropriate and I guarantee you will get an ice cream which is a little more aromatic and full of strawberry flavour.

I think my pictures should convince you but if you are experiencing hot summer days and need refreshment which aren’t grapes, make this ice cream right now – If it is bold, you know it is serious.

If it can satisfy me successfully, you guys will be over the moon, I promise 🙂

Wow, everything about your blog at first glance definitly made me think of something else – “bake yourself”…”burning” while doing something…catch my drift??? Glad to see it was in the 30s (prob 90s for me) where you are. I know what you mean about store bought strawberry icecream, it’s just not the same as homemade. It’s amazing that strawberries and cream are so amazing when frozen. It’s one of my favorite summertime treats.

    • Haha – I promise – no cannabalism, no suicidal tendencies, just a penchant for baking 🙂 – I guess the red and black scheme doesn’t help much either 😛
And I’m glad you agree with me on strawberry ice cream!
Thanks for stopping by my friend

This looks really good. I love the pic of the macerated berries. I haven’t been able to macerate anything in about two years. I had two fingers almost ripped off by a horse bite and the doc referred to it as macerated. Ever since I have had trouble with the word. Lol. I am over it now though, I macerated berries just last night. Okay over-sharing now done. Great recipe! Lol!

    • Wow, and my ‘maceration’ is red too! I am so glad you have your two fingers intact today (though that must have been one very hungry horse!)
I am also glad you are over this fear of macerate so you can make this ice cream 🙂
Happy eating what you make with your berries!

Annie’s recipes are marvelous…good to know about her strawberry ice cream as I haven’t made one yet that I’d repeat. And I’d love if you’d send some of your heat up to the Northern Hemisphere!!

I’ve yet to make ice cream! I purchased an ice cream maker over a year ago and it still sits in the box!! Maybe that extra little tip you gave on your secret ingredient will get me going as the color of your ice cream is just gorgeous!! I could virtually imagine the rich taste just viewing your photo!!

    • Oh my gosh – you simply must start making ice cream!!! It is only one of the most used items in my pantry now – rain, shine, winter, summer
And I do recommend the flavouring – I am sure you will get the colouring anyway, seeing the original post on Annie Eats, but the flavour I found seemed richer 🙂

  6. I am picky when it comes to ice cream too and landing on the perfect recipe can be a chore. However, yours does look delicious and I really do love the tip about the essence. I really would love to have a scoop-yum!
