Peculiar-But-Cool Habits

Before I begin this post, I just wanted to link you all to a foodie interview I was lucky enough to do on the awesomely talented Maureen’s blog, The Orgasmic Chef!

If you want, you can check it out here – It was such a fun experience and I just wanted to shout out a big thank you to you Maureen for asking me πŸ˜€
An awesome experience πŸ™‚

*************************************************************************
Now let the post begin πŸ˜‰

What do you do that’s a little… off. Do you wear your shirt backwards because you like that side better, eat jam on both sides of your toast and secretly fancy 2 minute artery-clogging meals?

I am so totally not saying those are my secret habbits. Remember I am asking you πŸ™‚

sponge

Personally, I think it is awesome to have little, how do I put this, eccentricities which make you totally unique. My family, as all families, are full of them πŸ˜€
Today I would like to show you one of my dad’s which he has genetically passed down to me. Parents, sheesh, whatcha gonna do with ’em? πŸ˜‰

We both have an unhealthy penchant for miniature useful little computer gadgets. Also known as USBs. But not boring, stick-in-computer-and-use USBs. I am talking cute, lilΒ  darlings. OVERLY I-LOVE-THEM cute.

Don’t say I did not warn you, it is an unhealthy obsession. Why unhealthy? I think my hysterical tone above tells you. Check these beauties… I mean… USBs out and vote which one is your favourite πŸ˜€

Spongey we are just friends! Put your pants back on! :P

As I mentioned above, my family has many particular habits which makes them my family.

sponge 15
If there was an imposter of my grandpa and my mum made, you know the way I would tell which one was which?
I would ask them in the morning straight after getting up if they wanted tea and a cookie. Not for breakfast. As their I-have-just-gotten-up snack. The imposter would say no.

Simple no?

sponge 18
I decided to build on this trait and decide that I can make a cookie you CAN have as your entire breakfast. Don’t judge me, it is really not that hard to see this beauty as part of a balanced diet every morning with a steaming cup of tea (or in my case hot chocolate ;))

I was further forced to make it (I know the burden I take on right?) because I saw Baker Bettie’s post and I fell head over heals in love.
You should definitely check it out here!
sponge 11

Thus the Giant Maple Oatmeal Apricot Skillet Breakfast Cookie was born πŸ˜€
So why is this the perfect breakfast

  1. It is a cookie. I can give you a cookie in your sleep and you will accept it
  2. It has oats – need I remind you of oatmeal
  3. It has maple syrup – Yes I have pancakes not only for breakfast but traditionally, this syrup is all for the morning
  4. It has butter – I do recall that one slathers this generously on toast in the morning

sponge 22
Ok I don’t really think I need to keep persuading you that this is a most decent breakfast πŸ˜€

As always I had some problems (surely you are getting used to these :P) – Bettie made hers with browned butter and raisins. As much as I adore both of them, they always remind me of an afternoon snack, watching the sun after working ‘hard’ all day. So I decided to make my version less rich in taste and more refreshing πŸ™‚

Here are my changes to this amazing skillet cookie!

  • Maple extract? I have never even seen this in Australia! But then again, why would I want to when I have real maple syrup to generously douse the cookie in – I cut the sugar back to 3/4 cup and used 1/4 maple syrup πŸ™‚
  • I did not brown the butter
  • I increased the amount of oats to 3/4 cups, decreased the amount of flour to 1 cup because I like my oats in the morning!
    sponge 14
  • I used a ton of spices as opposed to cinnamon because a) I always do and b) I love spiced oatmeal
  • I used chopped dried apricots to sub in for raisins since they are so bright, sunny and orange, they always remind me of the morning!

sponge 12
Soft, crumbly and perfectly moist, it has an outer crust slightly crispy giving way to a more-ish and dense oatmeal cookie. Each bite you lose yourself in it, and the unexpected flavour bursts from the apricots and walnuts heightens the experience πŸ™‚

Best part? It is actually NOT very sweet at all. So you are excused for eating the entire recipe in one helping of breakfast πŸ˜€

sponge 16
Go on, I will call it your peculiar habit πŸ˜‰

*****************************************************************************

Just before I wrap up and go relax in a nice hot lavendar scented bath considering my exams are through (or just about)

“Ceeee-le-brate good times, c’mon!”

I just wanted to first apologise. My spam has been working a little over actively and I have recently discovered that it has blocked out over 20 real comments per post! Sorry about that to everyone who are getting random replies a month after posting!

But most of all sorry to Geni @ Sweet And Crumby, Jennie @ The Messy Baker, Sze Hui @ Ohfishiee and Sandra @ The Foodie Affair since every single post, their comments were spammed!

I know you guys are totally not spam πŸ˜›

On a better note, thank you all for your comments on my last guest post over Sayantani’s gorgeous blog, Food Lovers Club! Though I was unable to reply to them since I was here, I appreciated every single one – you guys are too sweet πŸ™‚

Seriously, you ARE awesome. I’m almost 31 on the 24th of this month *sob*, when I was 13 I never even thought about cakes unless it was going through the store and me pestering my mum to buy one. I must’ve been too busy chasing the boys at that age, hehe.

  44. My Guru Uru, I don’t know where to start?
I did not that you still remember my email. thanks!!!
Your interview took me back 30years. I wanted to take Interior designing as my career and keep baking as my first passion. It still is but I do not get to bake as much as you do.
I like the heart shaped USB, its looks cool so voted for that:)
I always tell you that your posts make me happy and they really do. Its not just your recipes but the way you write. Sadly, I am not able to read all blogs but where ever I write a comment I do. I don’t know I am slow or what…
I would really want to have a slice of that cake lovely cake. No kidding:) I eat all fattening foods at my age but in moderation.
    Have a wonderful weekend!!!

And I think I will grow up to be just like you which is a wonderful feeling – fingers crossed πŸ˜€
Good voting choice by the way!
Your comments always make my day but do not worry about not reading every time – real life gets in the way and I totally understand that πŸ˜€
And I am glad you have not completely cut back – for me, fattening foods make you happy, but in moderation, even happier!
      Have a great week!

  49. Love this post and we all have our eccentricities, those usb computer miniatures are fab, I’m partial to the BMW, I would totally have that delicious cookie for breakfast ice cream and all. Reminds me of Bill Cosby when he gave the kids chocolate cake for breakfast when his wife was away. his rationale was that it had milk and eggs and thats breakfast right?? Great post you have a gift my friend.
