Huh?

My title is a little confusing. Allow me to clarify to you the confusion.

Augustus = Chocolate Covered Peanut

“Huh?”

Augustus = Chocolate Covered Peanut

“Um… am I being stupid here or do I not get it?”

IMG_5585

You are obviously being stupid. JOKES, no you are not. But allow me to explain the very nerdy, very school-ish inspiration for this equation. I do not do maths anymore so perhaps you may take that into account for my nonsensical equation (Quick, maths teachers, cover those eyes!)

Augustus: After sitting on the sidelines and then fighting for power using the assassinated Julius Caesar’s influence and lots of wars, he grew to a very high position in Rome and basically changed a corrupted Republican system into a just Imperial system, despite the Roman hatred of autocracy. Yeah… he was pretty boss 🙂

IMG_5552

He was ironically a very conservative man wanting to bring back the traditional morals of Rome (Huh?). Aided by his side man Agrippa, he did indeed succeed in this to a significant degree, but he twisted the Republican system with such finesse and to such a degree that it was all under his control, without the obviousness.

All under his control = Imperialism (even if no one said that word out loud!)

IMG_5572

*NB*: I would tell you the whole story in detail but this post would go on forever!

Chocolate Covered Peanut: He was on the sidelines of the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie system, who distributed raisins ‘evenly’ throughout their cookies. They assassinated the Chocolate Chip and retook their place in society, as Chocolate Chip was gaining too much influence, leaving his legacy to Chocolate Covered Peanut who fought to get a high position in the Raisin System.

IMG_5589

Chocolate Covered Peanut, too, believed in the full principle of being in a cookie, in fact he revered it, despite his power struggle to be picked over raisins. Slowly, with the help of Brown Butter, he subtly started turning the system around, putting himself and his supporters (fellow Chocolate Covered Peanuts) into cookies but with majority of raisins of course, though him and his supporters were obviously the tastiest.

Obviously the tastiest = Most revered ingredient in the cookie

Huh? Not anymore…

And that is the story of how a Chocolate Covered Peanut conquered and overruled the raisins in oatmeal-raisin cookies forever more… being subtle while controlling that cookie…

Oatmeal Raisin Choc-Peanut Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups plain flour, sifted
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt (unless butter is salted)
  • 230g butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tbs golden syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 3 cups quick cooking/rolled oats
  • ¾ cup raisins
  • 1 1/4 cup chocolate-covered peanuts

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C and line three large baking trays with baking paper
  2. Whisk the flour, salt (if using), baking powder and allspice together in a large bowl

  3. Brown butter with golden syrup until smells nutty then immediately stir through both sugars and keep mixing despite slightly gritty texture (the residual heat caramelises the sugar slightly!)

  4. Let mixture cool 10 minutes before adding in eggs, stirring through one at a time
  5. Stir through vanilla essence
  6. Pour the wet into the dry and mix with a wooden spoon till just combined
  7. Add in the oats, raisins and chocolate covered peanuts and evenly distribute through

  8. Optional: Refrigerate mixture covered by plastic for 3 hours or overnight for thicker cookies (I did not) – will not spread as much
  9. If mixture is too sticky, flour hands slightly and roll into small balls and place on the tray, 2 inches apart

  10. Bake until golden, around 18 to 20 minutes
  11. Let cool on a baking tray for 10 minutes before eating them placing them on a wire rack to cool at room temperature (30-ish minutes)

And that is my history lesson to you. Toodles darlings 😀

  1. lol, I love this post, Uru. I’m so glad you set the record straight on the chocolate covered peanut (definitely one of the most delicious inventions of mankind). I LOVE that you used them in these thick, golden, perfect cookies.

Of course. It all makes perfect sense. I just love how you’ve added chocolate peanuts – what a great idea. Your cookies look very yummy. Did you take them to school to share with your friends? You’d be very popular! xx

You are way too cute and funny, Uru! I loved History growing up, so you could have go on forever about Augustus and Agrippa and Rome, and I would have eaten it all up. Same thing with these cookies…I can eat them all up! And P.S., I love the way you British and Australians say “maths” – so totally brilliant!!!

Never liked maths anyway but love history. When I was in Rome, I had the honor to find out in depth about Julius. Btw, its impressive what you did with the chocolate coated peanuts and as usual, I can count on you for unique cookies recipes.

  7. This is pure torture looking at these cookies as in best case scenario it would take me at least an hour to whip a batch up and for sure they would not be as good as yours. Are you getting my comments CCU? Can you please let me know? Take care, BAM

You are too cute! Your lack of maths has accelerated your knowledge of world history…and if that’s why you invented this amazing cookie, I heartily approve (though I always loved math more than English or History!). Yummy cookies, my friend!

  9. A perfect way of repeating history, much more interesting Uru! Choco covered peanuts were `the´ snack to have at the movies when I was growing up.They are still amazing, so this cookie must be amazing too. Is this your way of pretending to study while baking…?!

Ahaha you should turn into a History teacher (of culinary events, at least). Saved this one for later. You can’t beat two things: chunky cookies AND chocolated covered peanuts.
