Getting down and healthy seems to be the newest trend these days, keeping that stomach trim and those intestines fresh and detoxed now and again. I am all for getting on this though I prefer my sweets with real butter and real sugar, with my usual return being more exercise.

I think I may have found someone to convert me. Meet Bek from one very healthy, Aussie blog, Crave! 😀 – She has goals to maintain, a fitness regime BUT makes some out of this world food without the usual fatty ingredients!

Why am I even talking? See for yourself with her healthified and incredible rendition of Rocky Road Ice Cream!

****************************************************************

Hey guys! Are you craving something cold, icey, satisfying, sweet..but healthy? Well ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to tell you that you CAN have it all.

But before I fulfil your wildest dreams let me introduce myself- My name is Bek and I’m behind the blog Crave!

1

Through Crave I explore my cravings for healthy food, the gym, a happy life and sweet indulgences. Originally started as an outlet for me as I dealt with an ED and some not-so-good feelings, I’m now at a much happier place with food. [Want to know more? Visit my About Page!

Whilst I enjoy decadent treats every now and again, like the amazing ones Uru comes up with (like omg- Peanut Butter Brownies and Browned Butterscotch Pecan Ice Cream, I also love the party that goes on when both my body and taste buds enjoy what I’m eating.

Now, because Uru’s Recipes are the bomb, I thought why waste something amazing? Why not just make it better. Better as in- it’s better for you!

2

As I was perusing through her recipes my eyes locked on to her Rocky Road Ice-Cream. Perfect. My partner loves rocky road ice cream, hell everyone does (or should!) and it’d be the perfect recipe to use my ‘healthify’ powers on.

When I try to healthify a dish I’m pretty sneaky in that I don’t tell anyone I’ve done so, and that I don’t want anyone to know so either! And if I’ve done my job right, when you taste it- you won’t know it either.

3

Healthified Rocky Road Ice Cream
Based on: Uru’s Original Rocky Road Ice-Cream

Makes: 1-2 decent servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 4 tsp of Vitarium Drinking Chocolate (Milo or any variety will do)
  • 2 tsp of unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 tray of milk ice (ice put into the trays to freeze)
  • 4 marshmallows, halved
  • Crushed nuts (we chose almonds)

Method:

  1. Place first 4 ingredients in a Vtamix or blender and pulse until desired texture occurs
  2. Stir in marshmallows and nuts
  3. Serve or eat straight from jug – no judgment here!

Double bonus points for a simple and quick recipe too!

4

Whilst this attempt had a more creamy, soft-serve like consistency (my favourite) previous attempts were more ice-y because I replaced the milk ice with a dash of milk and ice cubs. If you prefer an icier treat like below (think snow cone/shaved ice/sorbet), that’d be your way to go!

5

Now go off, whip this up and enjoy your indulgent, yet sneakingly healthy treat totally guilt free. If only everything could be like this, right?!

What recipe or food do you wish could be healthy?

I’ve always wanted to try Uru’s r.r. Ice cream. Maybe I’ll do this and the original. To indulge both sides :))) Thanks for the healthy version Beks!

  2. Beautifully and tastefully done, Bek. I discovered banana ‘ice cream’ about a month ago and can’t stop eating it! Love that you’ve added extras to make it even more special yet still good-for-you. Thanks for guesting here while CCU pursues her studies.

Thanks for your “healthified” recipe for Rocky Road Ice Cream, Bek! Bonus points for making it instantly edible — I always think the first taste is the best! Truthfully, I’d eat either version (yours or Uru’s) because generally all it takes is one taste to satisfy my cravings. LOVED your thoughts on “the party going on” when your tastebuds and body agree. Great guest post! How’s it goin’, Uru? 😉

This is awesome 🙂 Thanks for sharing! I know I am crazy because I don’t like Rocky Road 😛 I have this weird thing about no nuts in ice cream or anything that is soft…texture thing 🙂 But I like the idea of making a healthy version!

CCU, hurry up an get back to the “important” stuff 🙂

I have bookmarked this page for the spring/summer warm-up that will eventually get here. This is a favorite ice cream here and I love that you healthified it 🙂 Great guest post Bek!

  6. I often use frozen banana in ice cream, frozen yogurts and smoothies – besides baking. Just yesterday I made oatmeal banana squares.

    This looks good.

Uru, you’re half way there! Yay, doing the happy dance for you, my friend. 🙂

  7. So nice to meet you Bek and Uru I hope you have your nose deep in the books, your in the home stretch now! I love your healthy twist on a dangerous dessert. With swimsuit season just around the corner this is perfect. I think with all of those delicious flavors I might like it better than ice cream.
