Attempted Sneakiness

Dear Kids Of All Ages,

DSC_0050

When you come home from school, is this what you hear?

“Drink your milk. Eat celery sticks. Eat fruit!”

Isn’t this what you would like to hear instead?

DSC_0044

“Aw, sweetie, it has been such a long day. Eat this bar of chocolate and have some fried potatoes with it.”

Well it is never going to happen. Suck it up. Every parent out there does not care about what you want. They care about your health, your teeth, your growth and ensuring you get your vitamins.

Despicable, I know.

But, being an elder kid (haha, sounds oxymoronic!), I have learnt some tricks of the trade on how to get what you want while acting like an angel, and eating those ridiculous amounts of almonds. *hint* – parents should stop reading after this part.

No longer must you sneak packs of chocolate and hide them in your cupboard, risking an invasion of ants when you forget about them, nor must you get special packets of chips which do not make a massive ‘crinkling’ noise when you open them.

Now you can eat what you want, in front of your parents, fooling your parents, really easily.

This is what they want you to eat right?

And you can eat that…

When the inside is… FILLED WITH ICE CREAM!!!

Now, if any parents heard that little online outburst, pretend you didn’t. Because obviously, when your kids will be spooning creamy goodness from inside an orange instead of juicy flesh (sounds quite Hannibal Lecter), you will know.

And honestly, calling all kids again, it is only a matter of time before your parents sharp eyes catch you (frankly, chocolate ice cream does not come out of oranges… sorry…).

When this happens though… you can just offer some to your parents. 😉

They will be all haughty and ‘eat-your-lettuce-ish’, but when that sweet jaffa goodness hits their tongue, they will dissolve.

No one is mad at no one and everyone is enjoying a treat. Sounds pretty good to me! 😀DSC_0011

Hope you enjoy this summery treat!

Jaffa ‘Orange’ Slices

Adapted: My aunty actually sent me this recipe, and I have no idea where she found it, so if you recognise it, please let me know and I will add the source 😀

PRINTABLE RECIPE!

Stage 1: Oranges

Ingredients:

  • 6 medium oranges, with the ability to balance on either its top or bottom

Method:

  1. Place each orange on the side it balances on
  2. Cut the top of each orange off evenly
    IMG_4293
  3. Use a small knife to take out the majority of the flesh of the orange (store)
    IMG_4294
  4. Use a melon baller or small spoon to scrape away at the inside flesh remaining as much as possible, ensuring the skin does not break

  5. Place orange shells in a box and freeze overnight

Stage 2: Orange Ice Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup orange juice, strained from the orange flesh remaining from above
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup caster sugar
  • 1/2 tsp gelatine mixed with 1 tbs cold water
  • 3/4 cup thickened cream, lightly whipped

Method:

  1. Place yolks and sugar in a bowl and beat until pale and thick, usually double the volume
  2. Heat the orange juice in a saucepan over low heat
  3. Slowly, while constantly stirring, pour in the beaten egg-sugar, and continue to heat the mixture, till it has slightly thickened (do not let it boil)
  4. Remove from heat and immediately add in gelatine mix, stirring till it dissolves
  5. IMG_4320Leave to cool to room temperature before pouring into a container and freezing for 4-5 hours, until cold (it does not get rock hard, more like a granita consistency, so it is scrapable)
  6. Remove from the freezer, and break up
    IMG_4326
  7. Beat the orange egg mixture until creamy
    IMG_4329
  8. Fold in the slightly whipped cream
  9. Half fill the hollowed oranges with this ice cream and freeze till set (4-5 hours or overnight) – when holding the frozen oranges, it is easy to get freezer burns, so place a tea tower over your hand before touching them

Stage 3: Chocolate Ice Cream

Ingredients:

  • 160g dark chocolate
  • 1 tsp gelatine mixed in 2 tbs cold water
  • 1 cup thickened cream, lightly whipped

Method:

  1. Break chocolate into pieces and place in a glass bowl, over saucepan filled 1/4 with boiling water (make sure water does not touch the bottom of the bowl)
  2. Once melted, remove bowl from saucepan and add in the gelatine mixture, stirring till dissolved
  3. Fold in the cream once the chocolate mixture is slightly cooled
    IMG_4343
  4. Spoon out this mixture and place into the half filled frozen oranges, pushing the ice cream down so it dissolves into the gaps, and right to the top
    IMG_4350
  5. Set a piece of glad wrap over each orange and refreeze overnight

Stage 4: Serving

  1. Take out of freezer and leave for 3-5 minutes (oranges soften very fast from freezer, thus the ice cream does as well) – around 3 minutes into the ‘heating’ period, start cutting the oranges into Jaffa wedges (if you try doing this immediately, the orange will be so close to rock hard that it could snap your knife)

I think your aunty should take some of the responsibility for these treats!!!

  3. Yummy! What a fun idea and love the fact that you made your icecream from scratch so that part has to be healthy, right? This would be so fun for a party. You are one sneaky girl but this is such a delicious idea as oranges go really well with chocolate.

Your sneaky oranges are so much fun! I’ve seen this concept done using plain jello (and yes, to make jello shooters of course) before, but never jello-based ice cream before. Now that’s an unexpected and delicious twist!

    Clever. Refreshing. Beautiful. Brilliant. Genius…need I say more???! I don’t care if we have a foot of snow outside the front door, I want these frozen, candied, chocolatey, ice-creamy goodness filled fruit desserts now! 😀 😀 I can’t wait until Summer to have one…because honestly with the amount of snow blizzards we keep getting here in the States it feels like Summer will never come D;

I love it, Uru and I will definitely be trying this out.

    Toodles,
