Hello lovely people! Exciting news!! Like, super exciting news 😀
For the next three weeks, once a week, I shall be posting up a themed post talking all about the different parts of being a university student! Through lovely Liz @That Skinny Chick Can Bake, I met Ala @Wallflour Girl, who was organising a little blogger link up party for those experiencing the roller coaster that is uni life!
From different themes for a range recipes, I totally promise you guys, my blog, and all the other fabulous blogs part of this link up, are literally going to be giving you all a magnifying glass to peer into the world of uni students today! 😀
And what a world it is… #undergradstudentbloggers
But look at the time, I don’t have time for an ellipsis! Let us begin then no? 😀
‘Please Sir, I want some more.’
Oh Oliver Twist, how I relate with thee! I didn’t use to, I just use to feel pity and sympathy like your average reader would. But now, after experiencing uni life, I think I have finally realised what true hunger is.
Not true hunger like when I did the 40 hour famine – pish, that was simple because I had a worthy goal in mind. Oh no, university students go through a lot of different, worse kinds of hunger. Because you KNOW food is available to you, but you have limited resources to getting it.
The result? A starving, slightly bedraggled uni student. 😛
Now, if you want to go all Bear Grylls or David Attenborough and observe the starving uni student, these are the key qualities you have got to be on the lookout for:
- A zombie-like trudge step – books clutched tightly to chest, drool sticking to the side of their chin and blanked out eyes dulling every second they walk away from the food court
- A heightened sense of smell – You could be 50m away, pulling out a fresh slice of pizza, and their heads would turn all exorcist style, trying to find you
- Aggressive Tendencies – In the case that they hunt you down as you are about to eat said slice of pizza, David suggests you place it on a plate and gently slide it towards them. Their snarling will gradually subside as the food comes closer, and when their eyes are glued on the hot meal, that is your cue to run.
RUN DAMMIT!
You think I am kidding? I actually dare you to go to a university with a box of cupcakes. You will walk out of their clothes half-ripped, hair like a witch (or my mum… JOKES OMG MUM PLEASE FEED ME :P) and cuts and bruises from sharp nails, teeth and flailing limbs.
But you have to wonder – not all uni kids are living in a dorm, so many uni kids have jobs. Why would we be starving right? Ah. Ahahahahaha. My naive little readers. How innocent your questions. How dark the answers.
Do you know what it is like to be in the presence of heaven, but not be able to touch it?
That is a daily occurrence for uni students. Heaven in this case being food. Allow me to put my arm around your shoulder amiably, and use my other hand to sweep across the skies, clear the air and paint you a vivid picture.
Imagine you have just finished a two hour lecture (a medieval occurrence ongoing till this day!). Your stomach has growled louder than the dragon that was your lecturer, and people are smirking at you as they walk out. Your blood sugar is low, and truly, you are wondering how you arms and legs can even move.
Mechanically, you get up. You haven’t been paid from your job, so eating on campus isn’t an option. In your backpack, now hidden under textbooks that weigh more than the Macbook Air, and assortments of pieces of paper, lies the sad little sandwich you made in the morning, before an 8am start.
As you go to salvage the sandwich, you feel something warm on your hand. Slick and a little juicy, mixed with something… rubbery? Of course. The wrapping has come undone. And now, instead of the squished sandwich you hoped to shove down your throat, all that is left on the bottom of your bag are damp pieces of bread just asking for mold, soggy tomatoes adding red marks to your papers and a slice of cheese stuck to the zipper, enticing the rats.
You. Want. To. Cry.
Trudging along, your stomach now starting to digest your own intestines (yeah, you can feel it.), you suddenly pass by a sign. FREE BBQ FREE BBQ, it screams out! You want to cry with relief. But you save your tears and almost sprint with the adrenalin rush passing through you.
You get in the line, rubbing your fingers with glee, as the blessed smell of chargrilled onions and slightly questionable sausage meat sizzling away in the sunlight, reaches your nostrils. You finally reach the beginning of the line, beyond excited with ‘hallelujah’ on the tip of your tongue. But just as you have been bathed in the light of food, it is snatched away from you, a platform wrenched out from under your quivering feet.
And you fall into a swirling abyss of hunger, as the sausage sizzler chirpily asks you ‘Can I see your society card please?’
The sausage sizzle is for engineering students.
You are studying psychology. Oh son-of-a-b….
Apparently, you don’t even have the strength to think anymore. Out of the corner of your eye, you see a ‘cupcakes for sale’ booth. All. $1. Scrambling through your pockets, you find that shiny stud of a coin and begin to walk over, till out of the other corner, you see the time.
You stood in the sausage sizzle line for 30 minutes. You are late for your tutorial, in which, OF COURSE, you have an exam.
Hence, the underfed, starving university student.
Now, I am not lying. Exaggerating a little, oui, bien sur, but not lying. Either you have no money, or no time, or both but STILL a lack of food. It happens. That’s why all starving uni students need a good, solid recipe that will delight the taste buds, fill them up AND be quick to whip up.
Because living off adrenalin will last that long.
With spring just around the corner, I thought the perfect recipe (as you have been seeing throughout this post), was my salad. A side of toasted bread with butter, this salad is super refreshing, and the easy little drizzle of dressing is ALL you will need. Crunchy and then you get this delicious juicy strawberry, you can eat like a king after your zombie-fied day.
All uni students deserve a good salad recipe. This is THE one. 😀
Enjoy mes cheris!
Strawberry Greens Salad
This is for #undergradstudentbloggers, but also for anyone who wants a good-looking salad 😀
A Choc Chip Uru Original Recipe
Makes: Just enough for one!
Ingredients:
- 200g fresh strawberries
- 350 packet fresh salad greens (includes rocket, spinach leaves)
- 75g walnuts, chopped
- 40g crumbled danish feta (optional) – I would have loved them in the salad, but I forgot we had none at home!
- 1 tsp white vinegar
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- Pinch of salt and pepper
- 1 tsp white sugar
Method:
- In a small bowl, mix together the vinegar, salt and pepper, lemon juice and white sugar
- Wash, hull and cut the strawberries in half (1/4 if extra large)
- In a large bowl, toss together the strawberry halves, walnuts and greens. Crumble feta on top if desired.
- Drizzle the dressing all over the salad and toss again.
- Devour!
Notes:
- The strawberries may be glistening and delicious from this dressing, but the beauty is, you can use seasonal fruit, so easier to afford and still super simple to make – try it with watermelon or mango!
- You can add in flaked, toasted almonds for an earthy feel – this salad is easy to adapt since the dressing does all the flavouring work
- Try using balsamic vinegar instead of white if desired

Oh, yes! I can relate to the poor life if a uni student. I recently made a BLT at home and told my kids how I had to scrap some coins together once when I was at school so I could buy one for lunch. I never ate a healthy and beautiful salad like this… should have eaten better when I was younger I think.

You crack me up CCU! Ahhh the memories of college/cheffing apprenticeship days… I’d eat anything if it was free, and lived off 2 minute noodles and baked beans. Great salad, it looks positively decadent. 🙂

Cheese enticing the rats! LOL! Oh dear…that’s a dire situation for sure. I work in a university and I do see what happens to students. I completely understand what you’re saying here about hungry uni students. I often bring food in to share with the students who work in our office. This is a great salad, Uru, and I will surely be making it and if I’m clever, I’ll make it and share it at work. I’ll definitely give you the credit for reminding me that students are so often hungry! And good luck with your blogging meet ups. What a fun blogging adventure. I’m sure you’ll be sharing it with us. ox

I think it’s a little different over here since there’s what’s called the freshman 15… First year students tend to out on 15 lbs. of course that could be the starchy diet offered in the cafeterias or perhaps the beer consumption.

We had a food truck on campus, and people used to bring their food to class– the French fries and the fried chicken and basically things that smelled for miles– and I would have been on campus for twelve hours with no break between classes, and a protein bar, so I feel your pain.
Love the new series, and this salad is gorg!

OMG LOL. BEST DESCRIPTION OF UNI EVER. I was laughing the whole time I read this. SO glad we’ve met, Uru! You are such a gem. Let’s tack onto all that the “conferences and talks” syndrome, where uni students flock to these lectures and stuff for the free food sitting outside. I cannot tell you how many times my stomach has grumbled in the middle of these lectures as I wait for the platters that are an hour away. Ahhh. C’est la vie. SO looking forward to more wonderful contributions from your quarter, and lots of blog lovin’! Cheers, and it’s great to have you on board!

I love Ala, I love you, and I love this series! Everything you wrote here, I can attest is the #truth, Uru! Free BBQs and free pizza lunches were the life blood for me when I was in law school. They’d offer free pizza to entice us to go to different lectures and lunchtime talks. In first year, we’d actually sit through the whole damn thing out of guilt but by the end, we’d run in at noon, grab as much free pizza as possible and get the heck out of there! This salad is delicious – I love adding berries to my salads. Good luck with your studies this year, Uru! Although you’re such a smart, hardworking gal, I don’t think you’ll need luck 🙂

Best of luck with the new series. It’s nice to see what university students are going through these days. I went to university in the last century and honestly, things haven’t changed too much. I remember eating spaghetti with ‘Ketchup Sauce’ pinched from McDonald’s on more than one occasion.

Very funny lead-in to what will, I’m sure, be a great series.. I spent about 20 yrs on a university campus so it will be a fun bit of nostalgia.
The strawberry salad is beautiful though I don’t recall most of the uni students I knew having the planning skills to have such fresh ingredients lurking in their fridges. It had usually gone off by the time they were scrounging for food. Hence the trips to the food court/student center. Or, in my locale, going to the Chinese bbq place nearby, fondly referred to as “Roachies” or the nearby Harvey’s. 🙂
