A Hygienic Obsession (Giveaway – Ended)

Ok so this post was absolutely, 100% scheduled to be for the Christmas period. I was going to act like Santa, launching a giant sack over my back and Ho-Ho-ing till all of you guys were giggling – you know the drill!

But, my holiday mood kicked in and I got so busy, that the very ability to blog dried up and was forgotten in the corner, while holiday celebrations took centre stage. That along with other commitments means that now, I am making this a new years style giveaway and post for you.

You know, taking the whole new year-new you approach (as if that hasn’t been done before, but regardless, it’s all good!) 🙂

A month or so ago, Ollie from Performics contacted me, asking me to write about the importune of hygiene in association with Dettol products. Who am I to say no, especially since (as my mum will tell you) I am a hy. giene. freak.

When it comes to the kitchen at least 😛

Ever since I became a bossy, overbearing little girl in the kitchen, I have been unable to stand messiness while I am baking. I know, it is almost stupid, considering that baking is one of the messiest past times possible! But no, trust me when I say anything spilt will be cleaned up at that moment, without delay, unless I’m making a caramel or something.

DSC_0191

Food does still get my attention first you know 😉

DSC_0200

But back to my cleaning habits, that anal tendency of mine is the reason behind why I cannot stomach baking when someone else is in the kitchen. I can’t have bits of capsicum and curry paste mixing in with my cake batter. I downright refuse to have to share knives, I mean, what kind of society are we living in?

And don’t even get me started on my mum taking my sugar.

Oh. My. God. The gloves, they SO come off.

DSC_0210

But having said all this, I am so excited when my mum offers to wash my dishes for me (because deep down, I am still a 5 year old who loves not having to do chores 😛 )

Anyways, that is why I was so excited when I received these incredible products courtesy of Performics to try out while I cook, and see if they made a difference in helping me be faster, more efficient and even more hygienic when I was baking these fabuloso cookies. I mean, beginning with good hand hygiene is not enough, you certainly have to extend yourself beyond that to ensure good personal hygiene in the kitchen. .

_DSC0001

As per usual, I started off by washing my hands before entering the kitchen. Bringing back memories of food tech where the rule was ‘sing happy birthday to yourself’ – when you end the song, your hands are sufficiently clean. While I usually use a good bar of soap, I decided to use Dettol’s Revitalise Anti-Bacterial Hand Wash instead. It smells of raspberry and pomegranates, so who was I to argue right?

It also didn’t leave my hands feeling sticky after washing at all, or dry and papery 🙂

_DSC0003

The Touch of Foam hand wash I received, had a more oriental flavour with their cherry and rose combination, but it did deliver on the foaming after I washed my hands post-cookie… post-cookie-dough eating (you caught me…). It did foam quite a bit, giving me a mini bubble bath and again, I felt no papery skin afterwards. Plus, as with all Dettol Products, it killed 99.9% of bacteria, which is always a good thing!

Now, while I was baking the cookies, I was more conscious about how I was wiping up. Usually, I just use an old tea towel to mop up spills, then give a proper wipe down later. While this removes the dirt from the eye, any microbes wouldn’t go, so during my crazy baking sesh, I used the Surface Cleanser Wipes. These removed slippery butter and sticky sugar so much better, and best of all, left that ‘hygienic but not hospital’ fresh smell when I finished.

DSC_0197

Just made my baking experience that much better 🙂

In all, I found that these Dettol products just made it a bit easier for me to stay hygienic in the kitchen, while I still managed to enjoy myself eating cookie dough and copious amounts of chocolate chips (without the fear of bacteria I suppose :P) – Promise, I totally used hand sanitiser after diving into my bowl!

So now, comes the fun part…

I love reading about your cleaning habits, sometimes I can be anal in the kitchen including ‘sharing awesome knives or cutting boards.’ Your cookies look wonderful, chunky and fantastic! Hope you had a lovely 2014 and a great start to the new year!

There is nothing quite like a great chocolate chip/chunk cookie! I had to chuckle at your sharing knives comment. I cut the end off a bulb of garlic the other day (to roast it) and later cut an apple with the same knife. My youngest got the apple and immediately said “did you cut garlic before this apple?” (I even think I rinsed the knife but I guess the oils are harder to get off) So her dad (who couldn’t taste anything) ate it, and I cut her a new one…

  5. Oh, CCU, these cookies sound so great! By the way, I am a clean freak, except for my floor – I seem to drop a lot of things. Gibson waits at the doorway on “his” rug outside the kitchen (he’s not allowed in the kitchen) and if my back is turned, he’ll try to dart in and grab any goodies that he spies on the floor.

Ha, how come we don’t get those dettol products in my corner of the world. We get the liquid, the regular liquid soap. To be honest I am a bit messy or let’s say cooking is messy in general but I keep on washing my hands after every task and step by step picture I take =D.
I want the cookies too with the giveaway Uru.

But I know we’d have a blast cooking together–so long as you didn’t mind my terrible penchant for getting things so dirty so quickly! I’d clean with these products, I promise!

  12. Way to keep it clean, Uru! 😉 Since I share a kitchen at home with the rest of my family, I always try to clean as I go. I hate it when everyone else leaves the place a mess, so the best thing I can do is lead by example, right?

    Uru,
Your cookies are amazing, and I want one right now. Unfortunately, I am a messy baker, but I do try clean the used bowls and utensils as I go. Doesn’t always go that way though(:

First thing I do before baking is fill the sink with soapy water so I can wash dishes as I dirty them and wipe down counters, etc. along the way, too. After I’m all done baking and washing, I clean the counters, again, and the sink, again. Not obsessive about cleaning… it’s just that I’m a very messy baker! Love the cookies, CCU!

And like Angie mentions…I’ll need some cookies along with the wipes. You already know I follow you on everything 🙂

I finally made it here and just look at this wonderful surprise give-away you have shared:)

Well, you know I don’t do a lot of baking but when I do, I am Crazeeee when it comes to neatness and clean-up. I love that you still sing Happy Birthday when washing your hands. I taught that trick to my kiddies and grandkids, lol…

Thanks for sharing, Uru and thank you for the generous give-away. Good Luck to all the entries:)

Sweet giveaway Miss Santa Uru. 🙂 I am a massive clean freak when it comes to my food preparation areas. When I was doing my cheffing apprenticeship, I was like the nasty school principal the way I bossed everyone to keep their sections clean. I particularly love the wipes, I have them in my kitchen, my desk at work, my gym bag and in my car. Okay… I may be slightly OCD with my cleanliness. Haha!

  22. Beautiful cookies & I’m like you about no mess when I’m cooking. I’m the person who washing everything as I go because I couldn’t enjoy eating if I had a pile of messiness sitting on the counters. Have you noticed though that when you’ve been doing a lot of cooking, you tend to have fewer colds? Maybe you don’t get colds the way I do, but in the winter especially I seem to get one just from running to the store. I think all the hand washing while I’m cooking keeps the germs down…just a little theory of mine.

  27. So we’ve learned a little bit more about you, Uru! You are a clean freak–but I think that’s a good thing! I’m probably more obsessed with keeping the clutter down than the actual cleaning. I will clean very thoroughly when the dish is in the oven baking, but not as much throughout the process. But I try not to get too cluttered because it distracts me. These cleaning supplies look wonderful to me. I like the foaming…but I agree with Angie. How about throwing in a batch of those cookies for the winner. 🙂

    • Haha if I had a day off from going out I would try my best to send some cookies to you! Hopefully another time 😀
Mmm clutter down is still an awesome step, my grandma actually creates a tornado and I can’t handle it 😛
