My… sniff… last post…

What can I say my friends… we have had a good journey. I thought perhaps I was ready to handle it all, honestly, the blogging, school, my friends, my family. I was even combining them!

A couple of weeks ago my parents and sat down. Serious faces on (wow, it is hard to joke right now), they told me carefully how they thought blogging was affecting my schooling, how there was always time for this later on. I mean, (hopefully) I have a long life ahead right? During Uni, they said, I would have more time to constantly do what I want, not tied down by algebra and calculus and five essays in one week.

The 40 Hour Famine

Meet Burtukan. She is a small, unassuming girl, perhaps the same age as some of your children, 7 years old. But instead of learning how to read and write, playing sports with other kids, she is cleaning her dry little hut while her mother works from dawn till dusk to make 80c a day.

While other parents plan birthday parties and outings to the zoo with their kids, Burtukan’s mother plans on how she will feed her family of four more than one piece of flatbread a day, meagre and unfulfilling to the pangs of hunger.

What does a 7 year old dream about? Going to the moon, riding unicorns, meeting Buzz Lightyear. They don’t have to grow up fast, they don’t have any worries. The food comes to their table at least 3 times a day, their parents work. Such a simple concept.
Burtukan is growing up fast, helping her family out while forgetting childhood and dreaming of Cafe Share which she runs on a daily basis, serving sips of water in bottle tops and leaves as biscuits to her fellow neighbours with the Ethiopian sun beating down on their backs.

Birthday Post #2: A Guest Post At Cake Whiz

Ok, so you remember how, to celebrate with my family, I made an apple strudel which kicked butt (G rated blog ;)) because it had added caramel? Well, one of the reasons for this choice was actually because my family is not particularly fond of chocolate. Like I am 😉

So while we had fun, consumed vanilla ice cream at an alarming rate and enjoyed life to commemorate my 17th birthday, I also celebrated with my gorgeous, chocolate loving, chocolate obsessing, chocolate all buddies at school 😀

Birthday CCU Undercover: Little Rock Cafe

NB: This post says it was posted on the 12th of August but it was the 13th in Australia 😀

CCU woke up, a grin widening from ear to ear. She was 17, the big 1-7? Naah, just 17 😀 – the big one would be coming in a year but she was so not going to think of that!
She didn’t feel different, nor did she feel particularly older but OMG, she was 17 and she felt very very excited 😀 😀 😀

To celebrate son anniversaire, she [had her daddy ;)] treat her whole family to a wonderfully big and luscious breakfast. Toast dripping with butter, pancakes… what else could a girl want to turn 17 with???

Wishing For Spring

We are finally in our last month of winter. So long tall naked trees all wrinkled and gnarly. Goodbye mittens, beanies and oversized furry jumpers. Au revoir warm pancakes and French toast in the morning. Actually, I will be generous. The last ones can stay 😉

I am feeling Springy. Yes, it is not even close to September but I think I may have caught the totally-clichéd-but-much-loved Spring fever. Admittedly I am not running around cleaning the house (because honestly, spring cleaning is what?) but I am certainly drifting off into daydreams of flowers, puppies and rainbows.

CCU Undercover: Taste Of Malaya

So, CCU was reviewing her own reviews (ironic no?) and was a little devastated. She had yet to under-18-wine and dine at an Asian restaurant. She started imagining noodles, Szechuan sauce and hot, steamy spring rolls. Yep, definitely not good enough on her part. Dragging along her mum (have you met CCU senior? Ok senior is a little drastic, I can imagine her shock right now ;), CCU rushed over to the nearest fabulous Asian restaurant she knew and loved.

Rushed as in after 2 hours of dress shopping… 😉

Helping Snow White

So the other night, the Disney Princesses had this girly-girl, no fancy-shmancy husband princes allowed slumber party! All the cool princesses were allowed, not those 21st century ones, I mean, Ariel wanted to invite them but that is only because she met the Frog Princess while she was a Frog.  Not the done thing at all (because that froggy smell still stuck to her… poor thing :P)

Anyway, here are the invites:
