About Choc Chip Uru

Hi all! I love to bake. Can't really explain it any more concisely! Let's get some facts right before you start reading 1. Savoury is not really my thing - sorry! 2. I am obsessed with chocolate And with that, welcome to 'Go Bake Yourself'

My Favourite Brownie Gone Oreo

This is an impromptu post. Something totally unplanned, impulsive and absolutely as far from my usual personality as it can possibly get. But I deserved it, I personally think.

As far as my holidays go, today was a so-so day. I suffered moments of intense frustration and lip biting and I slipped three times slightly in my driveway. I did cut a beautiful fruit salad to serve up to 35 people, but that was about the top of my day. Until around 2 hours ago.
I’m sure though that you don’t want to keep hearing about my day (especially today) so I am going to get straight to the point. It wasn’t the best until 2 hrs ago. And I deserved to get it back up to my holiday standard.

Now moving on… 🙂

I have posted a couple of different brownie recipes before. There was this one and this one and then a couple of fancier ones with one of the ones mentioned before turning into this one and a beautiful creation of this one. Yes, satisfy your curiosity and visit these ones. You won’t regret it.

Burning And Berries

Today, the weather is scorching. I am talking hitting up in the 30s, flies galore and my feet unable to touch the pavement.

Pool, fans, ice cold water – it is all useless today and though I was planning on pulling down my Christmas tree today, it just didn’t happen. These hot days make me want to sit around with the AC on full blast while I eat thick juicy grapes and ice cream with no limit.

I am feeling so lazy today that I am not even posting this blog post till now, when I actually should have done it at least 4 hours ago. I had the pictures (which were taken quite quickly due to the unbearable heat) ready to go and when I sat down on my laptop, BAM – I fell asleep *smiles sheepishly*

15Anyway, this very UV morning, I was lounging around, enjoying a bowl of ripe, sweet strawberries when it hit me. It hit me with fever so hot it was if I had swallowed the sun which is currently outside my window. I wanted perfectly creamy strawberry ice cream.

What I Want For Breakfast, Lunch And Tea

Think back, think way back to when you were a kid – I am talking 7 or 8 years old. Weren’t parents so annoying?

“Drink your milk three times a day, eat your egg, eat your *shudder* soggy spinach and overcooked mushy peas!”

Oh, and in some classic Indian cases

“Have one more bowl of daal (lentils), eat more roti, you are a vegetarian AND therefore need more protein therefore let me overfeed you with beans and soya etc.”

Come to think of it, these are not way back memories for me at all, rather day to day occurrences. But let us get back to reminiscing… 😛
As a child, did you not want to fling down your spoon and retort back “I don’t wanna!”?
If you didn’t, either you were one very good child or had a tastebuds of steel or were just a little weird…

I ask you now? What did you ‘wanna’?

43I know I wanna-ed (actually, this is not talking past tense):

Happy Birthday Mumma 2012

My grandma is a chef. She does not work in a fancy-shmancy restaurant though she does have a second in charge under her (*ahem*, mother…) but if she wanted to, she most definitely could. 99% of the time, you cannot fault her cooking. It is pure, Indian goodness (can’t you just smell the curry from my kitchen?)

And, like most other grandmas, she was a darn good baker! (*ahem*, mother, you better brush up your baking skills in around 10 years time! :P) – Basically everyone I know has at least one grandmother who loved to bake. I think it is a grandma thing. And boy am I glad it is.

5Aren’t you? Can you not remember coming to visit or coming home to your grandmother whipping up, I don’t know, lamington balls, in your kitchen, which you ate so many of you felt sick afterwards but didn’t feel any regret? 😛

A Mini That Packs Punch

I know I promised lemons and coconut, and that is coming today just a little later… bear with me please 🙂

They say good things come in small packages. Well!!!
I am not exactly small and petite (rather tall and ahem… :P) so I would like to meet ‘them’ – you know, whoever the jealous person/people was/were of us taller folk.

In order to get my own back whenever this phrase has been flung in my face, this is my immediate retort: “Better things come in large packages” – take that!

42However, today, for the first time, I am beginning to doubt my own philosophy – no, no, do not get overly excited, it remains the same when it comes to people – I mean in terms of my baking.

A Sandwich Press’s Dream

There once upon a time was a little sandwich press. For all intents and purposes, let us name this sandwich press Susie (since let’s be honest, can you be bothered to type sandwich press every time?)

Susie lived in a moderately sized kitchen with all her other kitchen friends and she should have been happy. After all, she was regularly used (though the competition between her and the focaccia maker was quite intense) and she was well maintained and cleaned. But poor Susie wasn’t. She had a secret. The poor thing loved sweets!!

51Now being a sandwich maker, she got stuffed with bread, and *god forbid* ingredients like capsicum, tapenade, cheese, tomatoes – as far from sweet as one can possibly get! Once, a little girl who was obsessed with Nutella did make a Nutella-Banana grilled sandwich – but she used the focaccia maker and not Susie! (Susie, if you are reading this, I am so sorry!)

She longed to be with the oven, the grill and even the microwave! To feel caramelised sugar and give a little *ping* when a cake was ready and to let off an aroma that didn’t scream savoury. She was quite distraught and the thought that her dreams of being part of a baking league would never come true made her cry.

Welcome 2012 With Mangoes Turned Ice Cream

I wrote in my diary today. I have to mention this obscure fact because I got such a thrill in writing the date – January 1st (whatever) 2012!!!

I cannot believe Christmas, New Years, it has all gone! The festive season is closing to an end again already – just when you think it has all begun!!! But never fear – after all, with 2012 comes new school year, new experiences, new people and lots of new things to do!!! And I am still on holidays for 1 WHOLE MONTH still (jealous?) 😛

5In order to commemorate this new year and the fact that Summer is finally making an appearance in our obviously very cold Australia (today is a whopping 28 degrees with blue skies for as far as the eye can see :D), I decided to make something simple, easy and refreshing – I think that screams ice cream, but not the French custard style ice cream, but the Philadelphia style (because it is so much easier!)

A Very Merry Holiday With A Hot Fudge Sundae

Well, here we are at the end of 2011. What has happened for me?

  • I started this blog (YAY)’
  • I had my year 10 formal (woohoo!)
  • I turned 16 (the age of party, driving etc.)
  • I explored and became part of my baking – it is no longer a hobby, it is in my blood 🙂

Sounds like a pretty satisfying year to me? But what about you my dear readers – this year came and went so quickly – what happened for all of you? A marriage, a family addition? A celebration of some sort?

I am sure that whatever happened, 2011 was a year of goodwill, cheer and fabulous times for all of you – how else could it possibly have gone so fast?

Now, I do believe the Aztecs have predicted that the end of world is upon us in 2012. Specifically, “The Mayan calendar comes to an end on Sunday, December 23, 2012”http://www.greatdreams.com/end-world.htm
How creepy that that is exactly 1 year and 1 day away!!! *Shudders*
